Health and Safety Coordinator

Burlington, ON, Canada
Full Time
Mid Level
As the Senior Health and Safety Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in fostering a proactive safety culture. Your focus will be on preventing incidents through education, engagement, and early identification of risks. Working closely with our Health and Safety Manager, you will help ensure that our safety programs are not only compliant but also innovative and forward-thinking. Your presence on the shop floor and your commitment to safety will be key in ensuring the well-being of all employees.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Proactive Safety Leadership: Be the key point of contact for all safety-related inquiries. You will be a visible presence on the shop floor, actively engaging with leaders and team members to identify potential risks, address unsafe behaviors, and promote best practices in safety.
  • Training & Empowerment: Collaborate in the development, updating, and delivery of safety training programs, including WHMIS 2015, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and Safety Talks. By equipping employees with the knowledge they need, you will ensure they feel empowered to make safe decisions.
  • Risk Identification & Continuous Improvement: Conduct thorough risk assessments and job safety analyses. Your proactive approach will ensure that safety concerns are addressed before they become incidents, and that suggestions for improvement are implemented across the organization.
  • Incident Management & Corrective Actions: Support operational leaders with incident reporting, conducting investigations, and helping ensure that corrective actions are not just completed, but effective in preventing future incidents.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Collaborate with Human Resources and the Safety Department in managing WSIB cases, including reporting, return-to-work planning, and case tracking. Your role will ensure that all employees receive the support they need while maintaining a focus on safety and safe return to work.
  • Training Records & Certification: In partnership with HR, you will help manage and maintain accurate training records and certifications, ensuring that recertifications and testing are scheduled and completed on time.
  • Third-Party Training Coordination: Organize third-party safety training programs (First Aid, Forklift, Crane Safety, etc.) to keep all employees prepared and up to date on their qualifications.
  • Proactive Reporting & Safety Culture: Regularly analyze safety statistics and trends, bringing forward insights and suggestions to drive continuous improvement. You'll help cultivate a world-class safety culture where every team member feels responsible for looking out for one another.
  • Mentorship & Safety Excellence: Mentor leadership and junior safety professionals, fostering a culture of shared safety responsibility and continual improvement of life-threatening safety programs and procedures.
  • Safety Audits & Standards: Assist in auditing safety programs and help improve internal audit practices to ensure we are always raising the bar on safety standards.
What You Bring to the Role:
  • Safety Certifications: Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Joint Health & Safety Committee Certification (Levels I and II).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant regulations (e.g., O. Reg 851, CSA, NFPA).
  • Experience: At least 5-7 years of health and safety experience in a manufacturing environment, with direct experience in incident reporting, safety audits, and WSIB case management.
  • Training & Development: Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs and writing policies and procedures.
  • Proactive Mindset: A proactive, forward-thinking approach to safety with the ability to anticipate risks and address them before they result in incidents.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. A collaborative, people-centered approach is essential to engaging with all employees and ensuring safety is a shared responsibility.
